Frequently asked questions

  • What should "Grass Fed" animals eat and does it have to be all the time? Well, this is the problem you see. People think that 120 days, or 200 days or 300 days of access to the outside means "grass fed". Or that eating silage in a barn means "grass fed". What are the cows eating when they're not on the could be corn or grain....who knows! Is silage or hay as good as fresh pasture...of course not! So why should any animal that is not raised on pasture 24/7, 365 days per year,  be considered grass fed? Simply put, it shouldn't, because anything less is rubbish.

  • Should animals go into barns in winter? Yes, if its too cold for them, and it puts them in danger. But NZ isn't like parts of the US where it gets freezing cold. It is a temperate to subtropical climate so the cows can stay outdoors all year, roaming freely and eating as much grass as they please.

  • Does a Non Grass Diet really make a difference to a cow, or to me? Yes, it does. Cows are ruminants which means that they are made to eat and digest grass and other pasture plants. When they are put onto a diet of grain or corn, they get sick more often which leads to unhealthy and unhappy animals and increased use of antibiotics. While those antibiotics don't end up in your food (all milk is tested and must be free of antibiotic residues), what it can cause is an increase in antibiotic resistant bacteria in animals, which has a knock on effect to other animals and therefore can impact our food chain and eventually, us.

  • where is the expiry date? Its printed on the underside of the canister. Because our powder products are low in fat, they will typically last for about 2 years.

  • Do we have other flavors? We have just launched our chocolate and vanilla flavors, and have a further range of products and flavors in the works! Watch this space!

  • How many tablespoons is one serving? We recommend a 30g serve, which is approximately 2 tablespoons. There is a scoop in the canister but sometimes if gets buried in the powder, so you might have to take a fork and dig around for it!

  • Do we sell outside of Amazon? Not at this stage, but we are thinking about other e-commerce solutions, along with traditional retail. Having access to free shipping via Amazon Prime is a major advantage for our customers, which is why we focus so heavily on Amazon.

  • Does heat impact the product on delivery? We recommend that Pounamu Protein products are kept in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight (i.e. your pantry!), and ideally are stored at temperatures not exceeding 25c/77F. However, we have not seen any issues where temperature has impacted the product quality to date.

  • What is the Amino Acid profile of Pounamu Whey Protein? For the Natural Pounamu Whey Protein Powder, you can find it here.

  • IS POUNAMU PROTEIN "COLD PROCESSED"? Yes, our proteins are cold processed (10C/50F) at the ultra-filtration stage, as opposed to old methods that processed at around 50C/122F.  Note that it doesn't mean that the product has never been heat treated as pasteurization of the milk is a legal requirement for sale to the public in the USA.
