Here are some of Fonterra's key initiatives:
We have a commitment to low carbon dairying - Our New Zealand on-farm carbon footprint is approximately 1/3rd the global average carbon footprint. New Zealand farmers continue to lead the world in many aspects of sustainable dairying, with high efficiency, year-round pasture grazing and lower use of supplementary feeds. Over the last 25 years New Zealand farmers have improved the efficiency of their farming operations to reduce on-farm emissions intensity by about 20%.
- We are on a journey to zero emissions and zero waste across our supply chain. In Manufacturing, we are improving our productivity to use less energy and less water. And we are working to achieve zero waste to landfill and to have all packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.
- We work side by side with our farmers to continuously improve. We have a suite of world class tools that support with the restoration of the environment and reduction of emissions on-farm. And we recognize and reward farmers who achieve set on-farm standards across five areas – environment, animal welfare, milk quality, people and communities, and our co-operative prosperity.
- We are improving the health and biodiversity of our land and waters by partnering with local stakeholders such as regional councils, the Department of Conservation, iwi, farming leaders and other industry members in catchments across New Zealand to protect biodiversity and water.
